harsh truth: Boomers just showed up

as in showed up to a place

asked hey you hiring and if they were then

they just trained you

for the job

just like that

wow

an old roommate told me a story about how in the early 90s her mom showed up to this place to interview for a secretary job

guy from an office across the hall pops his head out and asks if she's here for them, a computer position

she says no nope nu uh I know nothing about computers and he goes WE'LL TRAIN YOU PLEASE WE NEED PEOPLE and yanks her off her feet and through the door

today she's a highly sought after computer technician making bank

the point is that once the economy was so amazing that you could get fired from most jobs and have a new one the following week or even the next day

fka-aj

Not to mention now LinkedIn is just full of promoted/advertised jobs that aren’t relevant and a shit ton of literal fake jobs

moldwood

it's worth it as well to mention that many "open positions" aren't ever going to be filled, that a number of corporations have admitted to listing jobs just to appease overworked staff by telling them they're looking to hire people to help with the workload with no intention of actually hiring anyone

ladyprydian

In addition there are people/hiring agencies who have created bots that have them apply for any new job that shows up with whatever criteria they gave the bot to search for. We had a number of completely unqualified applicants apply for a library job we recently had open. This was a higher level position (not entry level) so the education and work experience was needed. Half the applicants didn't have either.

Friends, I am begging you. Do NOT apply through Indeed. At all. Ever. At best you’re lost in a pile of apps that never actually get to a recruiter, at worst 90% of the apps you’re filling out are a scam. Always apply DIRECTLY through the company’s website. You’re 100x more likely to actually get a response. If they don’t have that option, red flag. Move on. Also, look these places up on Glassdoor. Find out if they’re legit and treat their employees halfway decent. If you’re a current student or college graduate, see if your school has a career services team. Utilize that shit. That’s how I was able to get multiple offers and actually choose the better option for myself. Work smarter, not harder. Times are shitty, but you do have a shot if you can cut through the noise.

Hiring manager echoing some comments, with the caveat that my experience applies to hiring people for software positions:

  • Those bots that people/agencies are using to scrape and apply for jobs are the number one reason that job listings (especially in tech) get closed so fast. Not because we've found a great candidate, but because a hiring manager will get 100+ applicatications from LinkedIn in under 24 hours and then need to go have a little lie-down while they stare into the abyss.
  • Always, ALWAYS apply at the company website.
  • Be prepared to provide examples of previous work. Don't go crazy, but make sure you have some on hand.
  • For non-coding positions, almost every "experience with (tool or app) is a secondary consideration. If I hire you, I'm confident that you'll be able to learn how to use a tool via google and asking your co-workers.

Applying for jobs is a soul-destroying process. But there is work out there, and you do have a shot at things.

the fundamental tension between wanting to dissociate modes of dress from gender and people wanting to use modes of dress to signify their gender so they don't have to play the Pronoun Game

jadagul

There was a trans girl I used to follow on tumblr, who I think is no longer here but might have just changed her name and I lost track

who commented on how it was easier to pass in Utah than it was in San Francisco. In Utah people were like "wearing a dress, has earrings, must be a girl, check!" Whereas in SF people would pass her on the street and say "hey man, nice dress!"

a tw friend of mine who lived for a while in ND then moved to seattle said basically the same thing, she wears flannels and work pants a lot, and like. that's a very particular type of lesbian in the midwest, and just some guy in seattle

played sims 4 for the first time and one of the married cis men had a desire to try for baby with his cis husband. i accidentally pinned it and could not unpin it. trying for baby is physically impossible. I tried to use cheats to give him a viable womb in create a sim but it wouldn’t let me do so retroactively. so I thought, maybe if they adopt the want for pregnancy will go away, and had them adopt a toddler daughter. but then the try for baby desire did not go away. since they now had an unwanted adopted child I tried to remove the toddler from the household, thinking this would send her back into the ether. it did not. instead she wanders the neighborhood like a feral cat. i thought the social worker would come and take her back so someone else could adopt her, but I guess there is no social worker in sims 4. so now the neighborhood is haunted by a smelly miserable baby that has no home but cannot die and everyone who sees her is uncomfortable. fucking omelas scenario.

chaumas-deactivated20240115

no one is feeding her but every time she gets hungry she simply produces a carton of milk out of the ether and drinks it

gremlin-pattie

OP— do ctrl+shift+C and type “testingcheats true” and then “cas.fulleditmode” into the bar, then go into CAS and change one of the sims to be able to get pregnant. mpreg is possible ALWAYS

chaumas-deactivated20240115
